Internships & Volunteer Opportunities

Military Families Speak Out (MFSO) is seeking interns in Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC.
Communications & Social Media Internships and Organizing Internships are available in either city; Development Internships are only available in Philadelphia.MFSO is a national grassroots organization of people opposed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who have relatives or loved ones in the military. These internships are an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain first-hand professional experience in a dynamic non-profit setting while making an important contribution to meaningful social change work.

Below is an idea of what the responsibilities could be for each of the internships, depending on applicant’s interests, skills, and experience.  In addition to those listed below, we also encourage and support interns in taking on projects they are excited about.

Communications and Social Media Internship:

  • Manage and track social media (facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc) to support MFSO’s campaigns and advocacy efforts
  • Research and/or draft talking points, Letters to the Editors, blogs, etc
  • Build and update media contact lists
  • Track media coverage
  • Learn and use our online advocacy and email software and website content management system
  • Data Entry

Organizing Internship:

  • Local Organizing — Working with local DC or Philly area members and chapters, regional conferences and local projects
  • National Organizing — Making contact with established and forming MFSO chapters, supporting MFSO campaigns and working groups, and developing campaign materials as directed.
  • Materials Research and Development — Researching, vetting, and compiling resources that will be useful to military families experiencing the struggles of deployment and post-deployment care
  • Supporting the MFSO Legislative Team, tracking legislation, attending Congressional meetings, etc (only in DC)

Development Internship:

  • works with the Executive Director to research grants and draft reports and applications
  • help create and implement online and social media fundraising efforts
  • thank-you letters and follow up calls to donors
  • fulfill orders for online store
  • assist in day-to-day office tasks

Requirements

  • Belief in the MFSO mission opposing the Iraq and Afghanistan wars
  • Ability to multitask and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Sense of humor and enthusiasm
  • Sensitivity to confidential information
  • Previous experience in a nonprofit or organizing environment preferred but not necessary
